Blu-ray/DVD Review: War Horse

Many believe that War Horse is simply a story about a boy and his horse – however it is so much more than that.

Director Steven Spielberg brings Michael Morpurgo’s book to the big-screen in a World War 1 drama that tugs at the heart in many ways.

The film tells the story of Joey, the horse and his young trainer Albert (Jeremy Irvine).

Albert raises, trains and puts all his effort into Joey, however, when a storm damages his family’s crops, Albert’s father is forced to sell Joey to a cavalry officer (Tom Hiddleston) who is set out to fight in World War 1.

The film follows Joey as he switches owners, as well as sides, during the war.

Later on, Albert – who now is of age – enlists and hopes to find his beloved horse.

War Horse is not Spielberg’s best, but the director does capture the love between a young boy and his horse and the tragedy and adventure that follows after.

FYI, check out some War Horse facts after the jump!

First Look: Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock

Check out a completely unrecognizable Anthony Hopkins, who has transformed into the legendary director Alfred Hitchcock for Fox Searchlight’s upcoming film Hitchcock.

Principal photography has begun for the biographical drama, which will be directed by Sacha Gervasi.

The film was formerly titled Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.

As you can see, Hopkins bares a striking resemblance to Hitchcock and the make-up has clearly been done very well.

Hitchcock centers around the love story between Hitchcock and his wife and partner Alma Reville, who will be played by Helen Mirren. The film also takes place during the troublesome production of the horror classic Psycho.

The stellar cast also includes Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg and Kurtwood Smith.

DVD Review: The Iron Lady

Meryl Streep is a chameleon. She is able to transform herself into anyone.

In The Iron Lady she portrays former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and although the script heavily focuses on her dementia and recurring hallucinations, Streep is fascinating to watch in every scene.

The film begins with Thatcher having a conversation with her husband Denis (Jim Broadbent) – she had just come back from the store after buying some milk.

However, we soon realize that Denis is not there. He has been dead for several years and this is just another hallucination that Margaret has.

In addition to focusing on flashbacks with her late husband, The Iron Lady also shows how Thatcher came to be a powerful figure in the political scene.

The film has flashbacks of a young Margaret (Alexandra Roach) who although was a grocer’s daughter, realized earlier on that life was about consequences.

And that’s who Thatcher was. She knew that she wanted to make a change and that meant many sacrifices, such as leaving her children at home when she had to be at work all day.

The Iron Lady portrays the mighty prime minister who led Britain for 11 years, however, we do not see as much of it as we would like.

It is Streep who steals the show and brings the script to life.
